Handwork is a publication that celebrates people in the local community who work with their hands and who have a wealth of experience in a specific trade. It tells the story of a different person with each issue. Those featured include manual laborers as well as craftspeople.
The craft of working with one’s own hands is not as common as it once was. It is important to celebrate the kinds of work that have become rare for many people. In Handwork, those who are nourished by manual labor talk about their relationship with their work—the materials they use, the manual skills they learned and practice, and their work process.
This publication promotes and gives voice to local people, instills a respect for those who work with their hands, and documents their work by illustrating it through photography and through people’s own words about their work from transcribed oral history interviews.
